This course introduces fundamental concepts applicable to biomedical instrumentation systems. Topics include the static and dynamic characteristics of measurement systems, the engineering design process, commercial development pathways, regulatory classifications, and electrical safety standards for medical devices. The course emphasizes practical design principles, enabling students with limited electronics backgrounds to develop instruments that may not be commercially available. Students will learn the principles underlying various sensor mechanisms, analog signal processing (including amplifier and filter design), and digital data acquisition, processing, storage, and display using microcontrollers. Applications covered include cardiovascular and respiratory measurements, biosensors, clinical laboratory instrumentation, medical imaging systems, as well as selected therapeutic and prosthetic devices. Course Goals: 1. Emphasize engineering design principles to enable students to develop medical instrumentation systems. 2. Provide updated coverage of modern sensor technologies and signal processing techniques. 3. Introduce contemporary microcontroller applications in biomedical instrumentation. 4. Present revised and updated chapters, descriptions, and references reflecting current advancements. 5. Strengthen analytical and problem-solving skills through comprehensive worked examples. 6. Provide supplementary learning materials via a companion webpage. 7. Offer a solutions manual containing complete solutions to all problems for instructional support.
This course is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students in biomedical engineering. It will also benefit healthcare professionals involved in related fields. Students are expected to have a background in engineering mathematics and basic electronics.
