This course provides a rigorous introduction to the principles and implementation of modern video compression systems. Students will study the complete video-coding pipeline, from color representation, transform coding, quantization, entropy coding, and motion compensation to rate-distortion optimization and the design of modern video-coding standards. The course emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical implementation. Students will implement key coding tools, analyze compression-performance trade-offs, and use real-world tools to evaluate modern codecs and streaming systems.
