1. Attendance at each seminar is mandatory for all the students who register for this course. Attendance is recorded by signing the attendance list during the first seminar session. The student shall inform the coordinator and provide a valid proof (e.g. statement from medical clinic) or a valid reason of the absence if he/she could not attend the seminar on the day. 2. English is the working language throughout the course. 3. Due dates will be established for your abstracts. Submit your abstract using the formatted abstract template (as attached) with your tentative title to Prof. Yang-Hsiang Chan (yhchan@nycu.edu.tw) one week before your presentation (For example, presenters on 10/18 shall send their abstracts and associated papers by 10/11, 9:00 AM). Failure to meet deadlines will also be taken into account in final grading. Abstracts should be concise (within 200 words), one or two paragraphs describing the complete story of your topic. Do not “copy and paste” any text from the original papers. 4. You are required to present your scientific materials during a 35 minute period (±3 mins of the allotted time is acceptable) on your scheduled date (see attached table). An alarm clock will be set in the room to remind you of the time. Your seminar should cover at least two related peer-reviewed papers (no older than Jan. 2024 AND with IF > 5) in a given topic. You should be thoroughly familiar with the literatures on your topic and strive to organize your seminar into a cohesive presentation, and be specific about what you present. Try to explain concepts simply and clearly, and define all terms and acronyms. Visual aids should look professional and be readable in the entire room; use spell check and proofread for typographical errors. 5. You are required to demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate the research presented in the peer-reviewed articles and to answer questions posed by the audience at the end of the presentation. Do not “seed” questions in advance to your classmates in the audience. 6. You are also required to act as the host of one seminar, according to the rotation schedule. All presentations must be delivered standing up, and reading directly from the screen is strictly prohibited. Failure to follow these rules will result in a failing grade. 7. Demonstrate an ability to listen to a scientific presentation and to ask relevant questions regarding the material presented. It is expected that students shall actively participate by asking speakers the questions. (You are required to ask at least 3 questions in total during the whole semester). 8. Your grade will be determined by several factors: your ability to meet scheduled deadlines, the quality and content of your presentation, and your participation in the course as a whole. Additional evaluation criteria as follows: a. If a student has not informed the seminar coordinator about their absence with reasons, 5 points will be deducted for the first two times. b. If a student has been absent in more than 2 seminars, 20 points will be deducted at the third and any subsequent absence (no deduction maximum). c. Coming late by 30 min (or more) counts as absence, and is regulated by the rules (a) and (b). d. If a student has submitted his/her seminar abstract after the deadline, or the submitted material is unformatted – up to 3 points will be deducted. e. If a student has not asked the minimum of 3 questions, 3 points will be deducted. f. If a student has asked more than 3 questions, +0.5 point will be added at the fourth and subsequent questions (no maximum for the bonus points). g. If a student is available to give a replacement seminar, or to introduce a speaker, due to the absence of the originally scheduled speaker/host – this student may be granted up to 3 additional points.
