Photonic technologies are indispensable experimental tools in modern physical chemistry and many interdisciplinary fields, including biomedicine, materials science, and nanotechnology. This course is designed for graduate students and advanced undergraduate students interested in applying photonic techniques to scientific research. The course adopts a bottom-up approach. It begins at the component level, introducing the fundamentals of optics, optical and optomechanical components, light sources, and photodetectors. It then progresses to the system level, where these components are integrated into representative photonic instruments used in physical chemistry. Finally, real research setups are presented to illustrate how photonic systems are designed and implemented in the laboratory. By the end of the course, students will understand the operating principles of modern photonic instruments and be able to relate individual optical components to complete experimental systems used in scientific research.
