Stochastic thermodynamics extends classical thermodynamics to individual fluctuating trajectories of small systems, such as colloidal particles, molecular motors, proteins, cells, quantum dots, single-electron transistors, and cold atoms. While classical thermodynamics focuses on average quantities like energy, heat, work, and entropy, stochastic thermodynamics accounts for strong thermal fluctuations at microscopic scales, treating quantities such as heat and work as random variables that vary from one trajectory to another. Information thermodynamics further extends this framework by explicitly incorporating information as a physical quantity that can be quantified, manipulated, and converted into energetic costs or gains. The goal of this course is to equip students with the skills needed to analyze and solve problems involving such small systems across these diverse physical settings.
