Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the key principles of American law and is a survey of the first-year J.D. curriculum at U.S. law schools. The course focuses on basic foundational subjects: constitutional law, civil procedure, contracts, torts, property, criminal law, and legal ethics, each in separate topics. Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, you will be able to do the following: 1. Evaluate and understand the purposes and key elements of various sources of law in the United States (constitutional, statutory, regulatory, and case law); 2. Evaluate and understand legal authority structures, identify legal issues, and assess source credibility and accuracy; 3. Apply U.S. legal materials to problems related to U.S. constitutional and common law; 4. Use sound methods of legal research relating to U.S. law; 5. Evaluate, orally and in writing, complex U.S. legal issues; and 6. Engage with faculty and fellow students in the case method of instruction.
Language: This class is taught in English. Prior Study: Prior study of the U.S. Legal System is favorable, but not required or necessary. Class Participation: Thorough preparation, timely arrival, regular attendance, active participation, a supportive attitude toward your classmates, and timely completion of all assignments are expected. In the classroom I use a combination of an interactive lecture-discussion method, so you may be called on.

Miscellaneous: Copying or recording synchronous classes and asynchronous course materials without the express prior approval of the instructor is prohibited. The instructor reserves the right to revise or adjust this course syllabus to best accommodate the pace and needs of the students.
The final examination of multiple-choice questions will count for 80% of your final grade. The final exam will be closed book, meaning that you cannot use your notes, outlines, or anything else. The remaining 20% of your final grade will be based on classroom discussion (you will be called on to discuss cases).
