With a focus on the Asia Pacific regions, the course explores how gender and sexuality are constructed, suppressed, reimagined, and translated under varying political regimes, cultural contexts, and structures of power. It connects to students’ everyday life by inviting them to reflect on language, identity, belonging, and the ethics of representation in a globalized environment, while foregrounding universal concerns such as human dignity, freedom, and equality. The course is organized into three thematic parts. The first part, Provincializing Queer Theory, critically addresses the limitations of Western theoretical frameworks and introduces how Asian scholars use the region as method to rethink colonial histories and linguistic hegemonies, developing translingual and transnational theoretical practices. The second part, (Trans)Formations of Queer Asia, examines how state power, religion, globalization, transgender politics, and nation-building shape queer identities and cultural expressions. The third part, Contemporary Issues in Queer Asia, focuses on the lived realities of queer individuals in authoritarian settings, sexual citizenship, transnational mobility, and media culture, analyzing how they respond to institutional and social challenges through creative strategies and collective action. Students will engage with cutting-edge theoretical and empirical research, developing comparative and critical perspectives on queer knowledge production in Asia. The course will strengthen students’ critical thinking and ethical judgment through sustained engagement with contested concepts (e.g., rights, citizenship, tradition, normalcy) and by practicing respectful dialogue across difference.
