This course aims to strengthen students’ academic English communication skills at the CEFR B2 level, with approximately 80% of the content devoted to academic contexts. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, note taking practice, and structured presentation tasks, students will learn to express ideas clearly and effectively in both spoken and written academic formats. The course emphasizes the development of coherent speech, logical argumentation, critical thinking, and the integration of spoken and visual information. Students will practice academic discussions, refine their ability to summarize and paraphrase sources, and design impactful presentations supported by evidence. By the end of the course, students will be able to: • Comprehend extended spoken academic texts (lectures, discussions) and identify key ideas, supporting details, and speaker attitudes. • Follow complex academic arguments, recognizing rhetorical functions such as cause effect, comparison, and stance. • Take effective notes and make informed inferences based on discourse features (intonation, word choice, contextual cues). • Synthesize spoken input with visual materials (charts, diagrams) to interpret and convey meaning accurately. • Participate actively in academic discussions, expressing and justifying opinions, comparing viewpoints, and responding to questions. • Deliver clear, well organized academic presentations on abstract topics, incorporating evidence, visual aids, and appropriate rhetorical strategies. • Summarize and present information from multiple sources coherently, demonstrating logical reasoning and effective language use.

Lectures: Each week, the instructor will introduce new material in class. Lecture materials will be uploaded to the E3 platform at the end of each session for student reference. Late Assignments Being absent from class does not excuse you from assignments or course content. It is your responsibility to stay updated by checking the E3 platform or consulting classmates or the instructor. Late work will not be accepted unless you have requested an extension in advance and received approval prior to the deadline. Attendance Policy Students who arrive more than 15 minutes late or leave before class ends will be marked absent and will not receive attendance or participation credit for that week. Students may receive attendance and participation credit for excused absences only. To request an excused absence, you must submit a leave request through NYCU’s Student Leave System (學⽣請假系統) and obtain official approval. Credit will not be granted for unexcused absences.
1. Attendance and Class Participation: 10% Students must attend class regularly and participate actively. Arriving more than 15 minutes late or leaving early without an approved excuse will result in being marked absent for the entire session. Active participation in discussions and activities is required. Missed activities may only be made up with valid documentation of absence. 2. Assignments: 20% Assignments include both in-class tasks and preparation outside of class. Students are also required to prepare an outline for the final exam. 3. Impromptu Speaking: 10% Students will work in groups of 4–5. In each round, members will rotate roles: speaker, counter-argument, timer, and evaluator(s). Roles will be switched every round to ensure balanced practice. 4. Mid-term exam: 25% Students will deliver a group speech in teams of 3–4. Each group will present a topic of their choice. Presentations should be approximately 10–15 minutes in length. 5. Final exam: 30% Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice. The topic and outline must be submitted and discussed during the individual conference in Week 13. Creativity and application of skills learned throughout the course are strongly encouraged. 6. Peer Feedback: 5% Each student will provide constructive feedback on classmates’ final presentations. Feedback should be specific, respectful, and aimed at helping peers improve.
