概述

Physics (I) is the first half of the calculus-based introductory sequence: classical mechanics, then oscillations, waves, and thermodynamics. We will cover Chapters 1–21 of Serway, the main textbook used in this course. The course is built around the analysis model: a small set of reusable situations — particle under constant acceleration, isolated system, rigid object in equilibrium — that let you recognize what kind of problem you are looking at before you write a single equation. The aim is that you can decide which principle applies, and say why, instead of hunting for a formula. By the end of the semester you will be able to: ● Describe motion in one, two, and three dimensions using vectors and calculus. ● Draw a free-body diagram and apply Newton's laws. ● Choose the right conservation law (energy, momentum, or angular momentum) and justify the choice. ● Analyze the rotation and equilibrium of rigid bodies. ● Model oscillations, waves, and sound. ● Apply the laws of thermodynamics and the kinetic model of a gas. ● Present a complete solution: diagram, assumptions, symbolic result, number, units check.

先修科目

● High-school physics and mathematics: algebra, trigonometry, vectors. ● Single-variable calculus. Taking Calculus I at the same time is fine — the techniques are introduced as they are needed. ● No previous university physics course required.

● Think-pair-share: for each question you answer on your own first, then discuss it with the person next to you, then answer again. ● Slido: used to collect those answers. Anonymous, and never graded for correctness. ● Recitation — Fridays, SC160 (FBC-SC160 [GF]): run by the TA, who works the week's problem set in full and answers your questions. First session Friday on 10/02. Bring the problem you could not finish. The TA also leads the Tuesday 3 November class while I am at a conference. ● Materials: slides go up on E3 before each lecture. All announcements, problem sets, and grades are on E3 — check it.

❗️❗️❗️ Grading: ● Midterm exam 30% — Tuesday 27 October, in class, 120 minutes, Chapters 1–9 ● Final exam 35% — Tuesday 22 December, in class, 120 minutes, Chapters 10–21 ● Friday quizzes 25% — ten quizzes (from problem sets), two lowest dropped ● Engagement 10% — Friday recitation or lecture participation ➤ Exams: closed book. You may bring a non-programmable calculator. A constants sheet comes with the paper. Make-up exams only for a documented medical or family emergency. ➤ Quizzes: first 10 minutes of Friday class. Closed book, no notes, no calculator. Ten quizzes across the semester; the two lowest scores are dropped, which already covers illness, transport failure, and one bad morning. There are no make-up quizzes. Each Friday 10mins-quiz is two problems taken from, or written as close variants of, the set posted the week before. If you have worked that set, ten minutes is plenty. A problem set goes up on E3 most Fridays. It is not collected, but some of the problems from the problem sets will be tested in quizzes and exams. Use anything you like while you practise, including AI. Just practise until you can do it with a blank sheet and no help, because that is what the quiz asks for. ✓ Academic integrity: nothing you do outside class is graded, so there is very little here to cheat on — that is the point of the design. In quizzes and exams, unauthorised material of any kind is handled under university regulations.
